Apartment No. 50 - 14.02.2010

Some elements of ‘The Master and Margarita’ come directly from the apartment at Bolshaya Sadovaya where Bulgakov lived from 1921 to 1924. Today we published a video of this apartment showing, among other things, a photo of Anna Goryatcheva. Anna lived with her son in a room of the korridornaya and from this room Bulgakov could always hear them shouting and bragging. So, Anna became the prototype for Annushka, the woman who spilled the sunflower oil which caused the death of Berlioz.

After the revolution - 11.02.2010

I am, to say the least, not a great advocate of experimental films. But when a Hungarian filmmaker says that his personal history mingles with the story of 'The Master and Margarita', and when his film is about a writer who wants to write a great novel but, to circumvent the censorship, writes his novel from the perspective of his cat, and when the film is filled with quotations from 'The Master and Margarita', well... then, being a webmaster with a sense of responsibility, I should pay attention to it. In 1990, the Hungarian director Andras Szirtes made the film 'Forradalom Után' (After the revolution), and you can watch it in full on the website if you want.

The Russian writer and poet Vitaly Shentalinsky spent more than twenty years on investigating on how a large number of Russian writers were persecuted during the Stalin era. The Dutch educational broadcasting company RVU ordered the making of a documentary based on Shentalinsky's findings, particularly on the files about Mikhail Bulgakov. The film was titled 'Manuscripts do not burn', after the famous statement of Woland in 'The Master and Margarita'. The part about Bulgakov himself in the film was entitled 'The Satanic Artist' and can be watched on the website.
