The Master and Margarita canceled

September 2, 2012

On August 29, 2012, the famous Moscow Independent Theatre would have made a guest performance of The Master and Margarita at the State Drama Theatre Kosta Khetagurov in Tskhinvali (South Ossetia, Georgia), but the show has been canceled.

Elza Guchmazova, the director of the Khetagurov Theatre, told the news agency Res that the company from Moscow had not sent the actors they had promised. The normal cast of the Moscow Independent Theatre for performances of The Master and Margarita is composed of well-known actors as Olga Kabo (Margarita) and Ivars Kalninsh (Pilate). For these reasons, the theatre had increased the price of tickets to 1000 rubles. But when the crew from Moscow arrived in Tskhinvali, it was only composed by unknown young Ukrainian actors.

According to Guchmazova, all contracts with the Moscow Independent Theatre were properly established, and she had no choice but to cancel the show. The 200 people who have purchased tickets, would have got their money back.

Murat Gukemukhov, a reporter from the news site Echo Kavkaza, got in touch with the Moscow Independent Theatre, and director Darya Dobrynina told him on the phone that there had been problems at the Russian-Georgian border. The company would have tried to cross the border at Verchni Lars in North Ossetia (Russia) to travel to Tskhinvali, but the Georgian border guards would have inhibited Ivars Kalninsh to enter Georgia. The group would have tried to get him to Tskhinvali via Turkey, but those attempts would have failed.
