A new statue of Mikhail Bulgakov

July 9, 2022

We are a little late with this news, but on November 12, 2021, two new statues were unveiled at the Vasilchikov estate on Bolshaya Nikitskaya ulitsa in Moscow.

In the front yard of the estate we see writer Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol, resting on a bench. A little further we see a statue of Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov, a great admiror of Gogol. Bulgakov is sitting on a balcony of the first floor next to a huge cat. Yelena Sinitsina, director of the Museum of Military Uniforms that is located in the estate nowadays, said that he is there to welcome the guests. Both statues are created by the Moscow sculptor Mikhail Baskakov.

After the revolution, a women's gymnasium was established on the Vasilchikov estate. The school had links with Bulgakov's family: the writer’s sister Nadezhda Afanasievna was director of the gymnasium. And in the summer of 1924, Bulgakov himself stayed there for a while on the mezzanine floor of the teachers' lounge, when he left his first wife Tatiana Lappa in favour of Lyubov Belozerskaya, who would later become his second wife.
