The new theatre season

August 11, 2017

August is traditionally the month in which most theaters present the new season. For us, it is the period in which we are looking for the new adaptations of The Master and Margarita. And the harvest for the 2017-2018 season can be considered as rich, including four different new adaptations of the novel in Germany. We can't say much yet about the quality of the productions.

The United States

On August 18, 2017, the Russian Arts Theater and Studio presents the premiere of Master and Margarita, or the Devil Comes To Moscow at the West End Theater in New York. It is the famous adaptation of Jean Claude Van Itallie, directed by Aleksey Burago. If you want to be there, you'll have to rush, because the first nine performances are already sold out.

On the other side of the United States, in Seattle, the Theater Simple organizes the Mash up! event on September 6, 2017. This event at the local Act Theater will include a sneak peek of their adaptation of The Master and Margarita, which will be representend in 2018, directed by Rachel Katz Carey. The also hope to make a tour with it.

Until September 3, 2017, the traveling theater Kulturmobil is touring in Niederbayern to play Der Meister und Margarita by Konstantin Moreth in different places. After that, Moreth presents his work at the Stadttheater in Landsberg, where it will premiere on October 7, 2017.

On 19 September 2017, a new adaptation by Andrej Woron will be presented at the Konstanz Theater. The tickets for the premiere will be available on September 14, 2017. Woron had already directed Der Meister und Margarita at the Goethe Theater in 2002.

From January 27, 2018 on, the Theater im Stadthaus in Rudolstadt presents a series of performances of Der Meister und Margarita adapted by the Swedish author and dramatist Niklas Rådström, who has already been successful with it at the Swedish National Theater Dramaten in Stockholm in 2014.

Finally, on March 17, 2018, you can go to the premiere of Der Meister und Margarita in an adaptation by Malte Kreutzfeldt at the Municipal Theater in Chemnitz.

An interesting initiative we found in France, where the Compagnie Pour ainsi dire from Paris has made Le Chat n'a que faire des souris mortes, a spectacle for children intended as a subtle exploration of good and evil, temptation and desire for freedom , Based on Faust and The Master and Margarita. From November 2017, they travel throughout France to bring their story to schools, theatres and cultural centers.

Poland is, after Russia, the country with the highest number of different theater adaptations of The Master and Margarita. By the way, Poland was also the first country, long before Russia, where stage adaptations of The Master and Margarita were created. Most of the theatres wth the play on the repertoire are having it for a long time.

Next season, we can expect representations in a dozen theaters, like the Theatre Capitol and Theatre Rampa in Warsaw, the Juliusz Osterwa Theatre in Lublin and the Teatr Groteska in Kraków. A special mention is certainly worth the puppet theatre Teatr Lalek Arlekin in Łódź, which is planning three representations per month of Mistrz i Małgorzata, directed by Waldemar Wolański, starting on October 27, 2017.

Aldonin is also the home supplier of the representations of The Master and Margarita at the Bulgakov House in Moscow, the next one being on August 28, 2017.
