Introduction

Over the years, hundreds of theatre companies worldwide have made one or more stage adaptations of The Master and Margarita. Which is actually not obvious for such a complex novel with three story lines, numerous characters and so many fantastic scenes.

It took five years before the first theatrical adaptation of The Master and Margarita was presented on stage. It did not happen in the Soviet Union though, but in Krakow, Poland, on June 26, 1971. From 1971 to 1977, all theatre adaptations of The Master and Margarita were Polish, by the way.

Until the beginning of the 90s, the number of theatre adaptations of The Master and Margarita was quite limited. There were several years in which no new productions were realized. But the last twenty years, the number of adaptations increased exponentially. In the year 2012, we had 27 different adaptations when we started making this inventory. And it was the beginning of March, so the year had actually not really started yet.

On the top of this article you can click the decades from 1971 to today. For each decade, the theatre plays are grouped by the year.
