Vladimir Bortko - The Master and Margarita)
Many visitors to this site knew the TV series directed by Vladimir Bortko, but could not fully enjoy it, because the official DVD was only in Russian. Some websites like Amazon present a DVD box with English subtitles but these are, to say the least, not really good.
That's why I subtitled the series by myself, not only in English but also in German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and French.
Yuri Kara - The Master and Margarita
The film made by Yuri Kara in 1994 was only officially released in the Russian cimema theatres in April 2011. Before, while the film was under embargo, there existed an unofficial version on DVD with 205 minutes of film, which is 87 minutes more than the film which was officially released. On this website, we offer both versions with English, German, French, Italian and Dutch subtitles. The image quality of the version from 1994 is far less than the image quality of the re-mastered version from 2011, but it's a unique document of its time, and the extra minutes may tempt many fans.
Maciej Wojtyszko - The Master and Margarita
One of the hidden gems in the area of the film versions of The Master and Margarita is definitely the Polish TV series Mistrz i Malgorzata realized by director Maciej Wojtyszko in 1988, and shown on the Polish TV channel TVP in 1990. Until recently, those who wanted to watch this series could only rely on substandard VHS tapes of poor quality. They were offered on Amazon with vague, blurred images, a poor sound quality and lousy English subtitles. Fortunately, in the autumn of 2014 TVP got quite unexpectedly the idea to release the series on DVD. Your webmaster made subtitles in English, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish.
The Master and Margarita Collection
On May 15, 2011, we celebrated the 120th birthday of Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov. To commemorate this event, we compiled a special DVD box. It contains eight DVDs with 6 movies and TV series based on The Master and Margarita, some of which were never previously released.
Some movies are old and weathered, others are brand new. All films are subtitled in English and other languages. This box set is good for more than 22 hours of movies.
The Bulgakov Collection
In 2015 we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the death of Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov. For this occasion we compiled a special DVD box. It contains six DVDs with the four most acclaimed movies and TV series based on the works of Bulgakov: the TV-series Master i Margarita (2005) by Vladimir Bortko, the TV-series The White Guard (2012) by Sergey Snezhkin, the mini series A Dog's Heart (1988) by Vladimir Bortko and the film Morphine (2008) by Aleksey Balabanov.
All films are subtitled in English and other languages. This box set is good for more than 18 hours of movies.
A Dog's Heart
Before he made The Master and Margarita, Vladimir Bortko had filmed another successful mini series after a work by Bulgakov. A Dog's Heart has two episodes and was a great success when it was on television in 1988. The film is subtitled in English, French and Dutch.
The White Guard
In the spring of 2012, the Russian TV channel Rossia 1 broadcast the impressive TV-series The White Guard by director Sergey Snizhkin, based on the eponymous novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. The beautiful renderings of some of the best Russian actors bring this series to unprecedented height. The film is subtitled in English, French and Dutch.
In 2008, film director Aleksey Balabanov made a screen adaptation of the stories which Mikhail Bulgakov wrote about his life as a country doctor in A Young Doctor's Notebook. The film Morphine was never released on DVD, but we could get hold of a copy, and made subtitles for it in English, French, Italian and Dutch.
Ivan Vasilievich - Back to the Future
In 1973, film director Leonid Gaidai made a screen adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's theatre play Ivan Vasilievich changes professions. Actor Yuri Yakovlev (1928-2013) plays a brilliant double role in it. We made subtitles for it in English, French and Dutch.
Have you got other ideas? Suggestions for other films to be subtitled? Own work, perhaps? Share it with others. Contact the webmaster so we can assess the feasibility together.

[en] I already have the 3-DVD box from Ama-zon, but their subtitles are not good. You have done a much better job.

[en] I congratulate you on this endeavor - ma-king available to enthusiasts a good film ren-dition (one of the very few available !) of this great literary work.
Emil Marcus, Matawan, NJ, USA.
[en] Since I understand English and French, I say: effective English and French transla-tions. I prefer French, because I believe it is easier to render Bulgakov's Russian humor and irony in French than it is in English.
