In the spring of 2009, the photo exhibition Le Maître et Marguerite, Création Photographique by the French fashion photographer Jean-Daniel Lorieux was shown in Moscow. The year before, this exhibition had been very successful in Paris. The photo series got much attention because the role of Margarita was played by the famous French actress Isabelle Adjani. The Russian businessman and financer Evgeny Yakovlev, the initiator of the project, claimed the role of Woland for himself.

The idea of Yakovlev was not new though, since one year earlier, the Dutch fashion photographer Herman van Gestel, who works in Amsterdam, London and New York, had already made a series of fashion photos with Russian models in a Russian setting, also inspired by The Master and Margarita.

Later, much more photographers would make photo series based on the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. The most impressive one was realised by the Russian photographer Elena Martynyuk. Her workshop is situated at the Bulgakov House on Bolshaya Sadovaya ulitsa no. 10 in Moscow. 70 shoot sessions were organized to make more than 1,000 photos. Some famous Russian actors figure in the pictures, as well as some staff members of the Bulgakov House. In 2013, the Russian publishing house Radunitsa presented a deluxe edition of The Master and Margarita with the photos of Elena Martynyuk. A selection of the best photos is permanently displayed at the Bulgakov House.
