In the novel Bulgakov often uses notions which the Russians understand without any problem but which have no meaning to people from the west. Sometimes they are linked to typical Soviet phenomenons which the Russians of today remember very well, like the communal apartments for example. And sometimes he refers to traditions of the Russian culture still existing today like, for instance, the dachas or the delightful Russian way of celebrating.

Some of the videos presented here are fragments from Russian movies also known in the western world. They have been selected because they are nice examples of notions used in the novel.
