The surreal atmosphere of a story about the devil in Moscow might suggest that many musicians from the supposedly more difficult genres of music would feel have their creative work inspired by The Master and Margarita.

But their number is much smaller than the number of classical composers, rock & roll bands and even pop artists who gave, in one way or another, an interpretation of the story of the novel, or a part thereof.

And when it happened, it did not always go as planned. Alfred Schnittke for example, who wrote the soundtrack for the film made by Yuri Kara, could compete with Bulgakov. The film, which was completed in 1994, has never reached the cinemas.
