Two theatrical adaptations in Avignon

1 July 2026

It is always remarkable when two theatre companies present an adaptation of the same book at a world-famous theatre festival. It already happened at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland) in 2010, when both the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS) and the London-based company Fragments presented their adaptations of The Master and Margarita. And it is happening again now at the 80th Festival d'Avignon from July 4 to 25, 2026, where both La Compagnie Les Divergents from Achères and Compagnie Les Vagabonds from Paris will present their adaptations of Le Maître et Marguerie..

La Compagnie Les Divergents

La Compagnie Les Divergents from Achères is known for its interactive adaptations of classics such as Romeo & Juliet and Cyrano de Bergerac. Their trademark is based on groups of actors (often seven) who rehearse all the roles. At the start of each performance, the audience chooses which actor plays which role.

Compagnie Les Vagabonds

Les Vagabonds is a professional theatre company founded in late 2012 in Paris; all their projects begin with a contemporary adaptation of a literary classic such as The Little Prince, Moby Dick, and now also The Master and Margarita.
