My Poor, Poor Master

Exactly one week from today, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the Dutch translation of the book My Poor, Poor Master by Viktot Losev (1939-2006) will be published. As an employee of the Manuscripts Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow, Losev devoted nearly two decades to the study of the work of Mikhail Bulgakov, making use of the writer's archive located there.

In My Poor, Poor Master, you will find all the surviving manuscripts of the eight versions of The Master and Margarita that Mikhail Bulgakov wrote from 1928 until his death in 1940.

ince all surviving manuscripts of these eight versions of the novel have been put together here, you can see how, during those twelve years, characters from the novel disappear or change names, and how new characters make their entrance. This provides exceptional insight into the evolution of life in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940, and its impact on the author's life and, by extension, the entire Russian society.
