Translator's Foreword
One of the sources I like to draw from on this website to highlight aspects of everyday life in the Soviet Union during Bulgakov's time is the trilogy Повседневная жизнь Москвы в Сталинскую эпоху [Povsednevnaya zhizn Moskvy v stalinskuyu epokhu] or Everyday Life in Moscow in the Stalin Era. My attention is focused particularly on the second volume, which describes the years 1930-1940 - the period in which Bulgakov wrote various early versions of The Master and Margarita.
The author of this trilogy is historian Georgy Vasilievich Andreevsky, a former employee of the USSR Public Prosecution Service, who distinguished himself after his retirement in 1995 through his reflections on the daily life of ordinary Soviet citizens during the period when Stalin ruled the Union with an iron fist. The author takes the reader for a walk through streets and alleys, shops and cinemas, parks and courtyards, introducing them to the lives of poets, musicians, and politicians. The focus is not on high politics, but on people's daily struggle for survival, on the joys and tragedies of ordinary citizens.
Nevertheless, Andreevsky does not shy away from politically charged issues - after all, they are often precisely the reason why citizens have to fight. He therefore also shows the reality regarding themes that Bulgakov could get quite worked up about, such as housing, utilities, transport, police services, and so on. As a result, Everyday Life in Moscow... is more than just a chronicle, something that was already evident from some of the fierce reactions Andreevsky faced upon its publication, particularly from the communist camp, who felt that he adopted «a contemptuous attitude towards Soviet reality».
