Mum Puppettheatre

The Mum Puppettheatre of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, USA) stopped its activities with an Out of Business Sale on June 29, 2008, after 23 years. This theatre, founded by puppet wunderkind Robert Smythe, was con-sistently creating new puppet works, and hiring and promoting some of the most interesting work in the area.

Founded in 1985, Mum Puppettheatre was a touring theatre company that performed original works around the world and in their home city of Philadelphia. They have toured on 4 continents since 1990. It was the first American theatre company to perform in Romania after the revolution of 1991.

In their last year, in February 2008, Mum Puppettheatre presented Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, adapted by Adrienne Mackey. Ro-bert DaPonte and Robert Smythe, the only two human performers in the show  managed to play the whole cast and were intended to serve not only as actors but as narrators, guiding the audience through the interwoven plots before diving into the action.
