The Master and Margarita in operas and musicals
Besides a countless number of theatre makers, there are also quite some composers and directors of musical theatre who felt the need to stage The Master and Margarita.
What is striking is the large number of operas. And especially the number of operas which were never put in scene and of which, at the best, a concert version was performed, albeit usually only partially. But that should not be surprising: the story of The Master and Margarita is so complex that it is almost impossible to stage it when you need a symphonic orchestra and a complete choir.
The lighter music theatre genre, the musical, has has also tried to put The Master and Margarita on scene.
The Russian composer Aleksandr Gradsky made what he called a «rock opera». While writing The Master and Margarita he had to go through a real agony which lasted longer than the time Bulgakov needed to write his novel. He worked exactly 30 years on his Master i Margarita, and when the work was finished, he encountered some trouble to find the right performers. But it seems to have been worth the effort, because the rock opera, which was released on CD in 2009, lasts 3 hours and 5 minutes
It is possible that I have missed a few operas and musicals. If you happen to know others, do not hesitate to contact me.
